For the past couple months I have been in a program called P.A.L.S. (Positive Adult Leaders in Society) through Phoenix Youth at Risk. I was matched with a little girl named Rebekah. She is Native American and 6 years old (she will turn 7 on September 23). Rebekah has a twin sister, Marissa. They are identical! Rebekah and I get together at least once a week. She loves to come and hang out at our house and go swimming, play games and lots of other things. We have a lot of fun. She is full of personality and just loves John, too. Rebekah has definintely been a great addition to our lives.
John will be matched with a freshman boy in a couple weeks. He is in a program called "New Pathways" which is also through Phoenix Youth at Risk. John has been training for 3 hours a week for the last few weeks. On September 16th he will go on a 4 day retreat in Prescott, AZ with all the other mentors and the kids that are in the program. At the end of the retreat, they will all be matched. These are kids that have requested to be in this program and are looking for additional guidance as they go through their high school years. This is a newer program and has only been going on a couple of years. If the match is successful, John could end up mentoring his youth all through high school. He is really enjoying the training and looking forward to meeting his match. .
